Welcome to Oak Class!
Oak Class is home to our Nursery, Reception, Year 1 & Year 2 learners at Langdale. We enjoy learning in lots of exciting ways in our wonderful classroom provision and outdoor area.
This year, the adults in Oak Class are:

HLTAs: Mrs Western and Mr Clayton
TA: Mrs Blakeney
Oak class have PE on a Tuesday afternoon and outdoor learning on a Friday afternoon. Children in Reception upwards should keep PE kits in school all week. Children should have appropriate clothing and footwear in school for their Learning Beyond the Classroom adventures, which could happen at any moment!

Learning Overview
Here you will find information about what Oak class will be learning during the half term. The Oak staff team will upload this information at the start of each new half term so that you are aware of the teaching and learning opportunities and how best you could support your child/ren at home.

March 2026
We had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day! We enjoyed a book picnic, sharing the stories our characters came from as well as some of our classroom favourites.
Afterwards, we let our imaginations run wild as we explored what might happen if our book characters landed in our back field! The children loved role-playing, adapting their storylines to fit the new surroundings. We even had some brilliant and unexpected character crossovers!
Throughout the day, the children developed their speaking and listening skills through oral storytelling, built confidence performing in role, and deepened their understanding of character, setting and narrative.
A wonderful day full of creativity, collaboration and a real love of reading!
February 2026
Children have loved their exploration of the story 'Home for a Stone'! Through discussing the different scenes in the book. They set off to find places they feel a stone would like to live. At the top of the list, a rockery!
And so they built. They gathered various shaped and sized stones to assemble in an ever-increasing cone-shaped structure. It was at this point that some children recognised the structure as being similar to 'a tower on a hill'. After this, the children desperately described and modelled cairns, which led to a wonderful journey throughout the grounds.
January 2026
Oak class had the most magical day in the snow!
The children fully embraced the winter wonderland, role-playing through the pines as snow leopards and sliding down "icebergs" like penguins! They enjoyed rolling down the hills and making marks using their feet and different sticks. Big Oak even attempted to mould 3D shapes in the snow, following our recent maths unit! They showed great teamwork, coming together to build snowmen and create snow angels, and even ran a coffee shop next to the fire to keep us all warm!
We finished the morning by warming up inside with some warm juice and a cosy story!
Moments like these show just how special our learning environment is!
December 2025
Oak Class ventured to St. Mary's in Ambleside. They were welcomed into an immersive setting, filled with activities, characters and storytelling. They assumed the roles of characters from the Nativity, thinking about how they may have felt and what choices they may have been making. After this, they headed downstairs, visiting the floating tree. They considered who they were thankful for and how their families help them to be happy. Upon their arrival back at school, the children created mangers from boxes and whizzed their babies around the classroom!
November 2025
With snow on the mountains, sun in the sky and crunching leaves underfoot, Little Oak set off on an arctic adventure. The children broke through thick ice, crunched across deep snow and gazed at distant glaciers, seeking shelter from the elements. Spotting the remnants of a historic structure, they gathered sticks, leaves and branches to build and insulate their bed for the night. After a good sleep, they scaled the tallest mountain before deciding the best method for descending was - of course - rolling all the way down! Storytelling isn't just fun; it's a powerful tool that turns familiar places into brand-new settings. It nurtures a love for reading and provides endless opportunities for imagination, play, and problem-solving. We love it!
Big and Little Oak welcomed Nick Greenall (Windermere Science Festival organiser and our Vice Chair of Governors) into their school with Mr Morgan for a science bonanza!
We often marvel at the scale of things around school, from striking fells to grand, old trees but today was different. We went small. Finding natural objects - that would often go unnoticed - to observe, investigate and describe. The children took on the challenge of finding something usual and placing it under the microscope. The gasps and awe echoed through the school as more and more was discovered about these intricate specimens that proved to be not so ordinary at all.
October 2025
Today, throughout the school, children were celebrating National Poetry Day. From local poets to Children's Laureates, the children explored poems with a focus on the theme of nature. Nursery to Year 2 discovered the work of Joseph Coelho, an inspirational poet with striking illustrations depicting the journey through his poems. They loved creating a local adaptation of his To The Countryside poem, detailing the journey from Ambleside to Chapel Stile. Further up the school, the children took inspiration from their lived memories. They designed leaves and wrote their poems on the reverse, drawing comparisons between memories, seasonal change and magical moments.
Little Oak's big Out and About stayed rather local this week. After planning their route on the big screen, they set off to venture around their local area. We wandered around the perimeter of the school before taking a small detour into a graveyard. This was the moment that blew me away. After asking lots of questions about the names on the graves, entirely on their own volition, they started to place special leaves, sticks and twigs in the flower holders that they had collected along their walk. When asked why, they said "to say hello", "make it look pretty", "to help". This special moment demonstrated everything good about Langdale: the community, the caring nature and the beauty of small acts.
After this, we walked up to the church for a snack and story before heading back to school, just in time for lunch.
